Automation Engineer - Canton, OH

Position Summary:
Responsible for the design, development, and support of automated equipment for industrial cleaning in the petro-chemical industry. This equipment uses PLC control to position high pressure cleaning nozzles, primarily for cleaning heat exchanger tubes in customer facilities. The Automation Engineer will use customer-provided heat exchanger drawings to create toolpaths and strategies to efficiently clean the heat exchanger tubes. The Automation Engineer will also use operational feedback from field personnel for continuous improvement of the equipment through changes to the PLC controls, HMI, and mechanical components. Frequently, adaptation of existing equipment for specific applications is required.

Essential Duties:
  • Create toolpaths and strategies for cleaning heat exchanger tubes based on customer-provided data
  • Create electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics using AutoCAD or equivalent (Draftsight, etc...)
  • Create and manage Bill of Materials
  • Create/modify various PLC programs using established format
  • Create/modify various HMI programs using established format
  • Create/modify application software using Microsoft Visual Studio - Visual Basic, C
  • Create/modify simple HTML web pages
  • Create assemblies, parts, and mechanical drawings using SolidWorks
  • Troubleshoot electro-mechanical machinery
  • Assemble control panels and other machinery
  • Create reports summarizing cleaning job data for customers
  • Provide hands-on support and training to field personnel on operation of automated equipment
  • Some travel required
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Working Environment:
  • Office, shop, industiral sites, petro-chemical plants and refineries.
Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Robotics) with focus in PLC programming and/or software development.
Skills and Experience:
  • 5-years minimum in industrial automation design/development
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley preferred)
  • Understand CNC programming and machine paths
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic system component sizing (valves, tubing, etc…)
  • Proficiency in CAD (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Draftsight, etc…)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Understand NFPA 70 National Electric Code. Ability to specify wire types, size wires, specify conduit, size conduit, size motor starters, specify enclosures, etc. Understand classification of hazardous areas and wiring methods
  • Understand NFPA 79 Electrical Standard for Electrical Machines. Ability to perform risk assessments, specify wire colors, design circuits for machinery, etc
  • Understand NFPA 70e Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Ability to perform tasks safely, specify fuses, etc
  • Understand OSHA standards. Understand LOTO. Create LOTO placards
